West House

This courtyard space in Chillingham, Northumberland was not being used to its full potential with a lot of the space being inaccessible with small dark grey paved paths creating a oppressive feel. We redesigned this courtyard with a light-coloured sandstone paving and cobbles to match which have been used to break up the space and zone areas. A circular cobble patio is dedicated to a dining space, surrounded by shade tolerant planting that lifts the whole area. We designed a raised timber bed with built in seating to maximise a sunny spot and create some different levels that help break up the space. A planting pocket with cobbled detailing interrupts the vast area of paving with greenery and texture. Overall the space now feels light, soothing and much more open. The planting errs on the side of traditional to sit perfectly alongside this period property.

  • Private home, Chillingham, Northumberland.

  • To make a dark and shaded courtyard a useable and inviting space that can be used for dining and entertaining. The requirements included low maintenance and dog friendly. All plant species were chosen with this in mind.

  • The circular cobble patio that sits within the sandstone paving with a back drop of planting.
