Rocket House
Planted in Spring 2025, this small gravel garden sits overlooking the picturesque and renowned Embleton Bay. As one of the last remaining Rocket Houses on the North East coast, it was a real privilege to be asked to design the small plot of garden belonging to this RIBA award-winning heritage building that has recently been lovingly restored. With a view across the bay and a site belonging to a piece of the county’s history, it was important to take a sensitive approach with materials and plant choices. Working closely with the clients to make informed choices, we cleared the existing shrubbery and vegetation and turned it into a usable space with coastal-tolerant planting and materials that compliment the existing whinstone walls and winding cobble steps.

To transform a small overgrown area next to The Rocket House into a space to sit and enjoy one of Northumberland’s best views. The brief was to remove all existing weather beaten and diseased shrubs and replace them with coastal appropriate plants that would provide colour and texture without blocking the view.

The Yorkshire Cream aggregate that forms this gravel garden has really lifted the space and enhanced the existing whinstone walling and characterful cobbles.
